Wedding Photography for Non-Posey People

You’re just about to have a chat with your wedding photographer but one issue keeps entering your mind, ‘I don’t like having my photograph taken’.

Trust me, I get this all the time. In fact, I don’t think I have yet had one couple who hasn’t been worried about posing for the camera! It’s totally understandable, you want nice wedding photos to cherish but you’re not comfortable being in front of the camera. You’re worried it will take too much time away from your wedding day. There’s going to be a lot of people there, it might be embarrassing!

So what do you do? Firstly, don’t panic. There are many different styles of wedding photography, personally I prefer a documentary style of shooting.

What is documentary style Wedding Photography?

Documentary style photography is generally about telling a story. It documents your day, exactly as it happens. This means capturing the day naturally, without staging a posed photo!

I won’t be asking you to do things over and over again to capture the shot, meaning minimal interruption to your special day, allowing you to enjoy the moment! It is your day after all, you should enjoy it as you wish. As a photographer I prefer to capture those candid moments during the day that are quite often forgotten about, or overlooked, so when you look back at your photos you remember the smaller details, not just the big event!

So it’s all documentary photos then …?

Well …. Yes and no! Don’t get me wrong, the majority of your photos will be candid, however I won’t have done my job properly if I don’t capture a few photos of the newly wed couple!

Don’t exit stage left just yet! It doesn’t have to be scary! In fact the less ‘posy’ the photo the better it looks! Generally, I will take my couple away somewhere picturesque and quiet to allow you both sometime to relax and enjoy your first few moments as a married couple! I generally leave aside 20 – 30 minutes to take some natural shots.

How do I pose without looking awkward?

Generally starting off with a hand in hand walk is a good way of relaxing in front of the camera. Then I like to find a nice area for some portraits. I might give you a little direction during these shots, like where to place your hands, whether to look at me or each other etc.

One huge tip I give to all my couples is to have a pre-wedding shoot. To me, these are essential to help you relax on your big day. It’s a time where we can get to know each other and gives you chance to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. I also run through a couple of super easy ways to stand and move so that it doesn’t feel like posing but we get the gorgeous shot, like some of these below!

Pre-Wedding shoots are included as part of my full day package, or can be an optional extra for my half day package priced at £150. For more details on my packages click here > Packages & Prices.

But we’re not a ‘lovey dovey’ couple …

That’s fine! This is your wedding, I’m here to capture both of you, exactly how you are. Naturally.

Just keep in mind that who ever you choose to be your wedding photographer, they only want the best for you. The best experience, the best photos and the best wedding day to remember. It’s important that you find someone that you are comfortable with and feel you can be honest with during the process. If there is something you’re really not keen on, say!

I always offer a free no obligation chat (either virtually or in person- which ever works for you) to allow you time to get to know me and ask any burning questions!

The ultimate aim is to experience a wonderful, relaxed day that you’ll cherish for a lifetime!
